Indian Cook-And-Delivery Startups To Witness Rise In 2015


Despite the lack of financial backing and marketing tools, 2015 is estimated to bring a surge in such oriented startups. However, Yumist in Gurgaon and FRSH, Mumbai’s HolaChef, and cricketer Robin Uthappa sponsored iTiffin in Bengaluru have managed to run with the aid of funding from VCs and investors.

Lunchbox, ChennaiUnlike Zomato and Foodpanda, focused on connecting customers to eateries, companies like FRSH and iTiffin are running on the business idea of cooking and delivering. iTiffin’s progress in this low budget venture has drawn increasing number of cook-and-deliver food startup entrepreneur  to set afloat with their ideas. iTiffin presently caters 2,500 customers with a majority of them are from offices. The service can be availed by shelling out 2,000 per month.

Sumit Tuteja, co-founder at FRSH, believes that Gurgaon and Bangalore are increasingly drawing such startups as he said, “Both places have a robust migrant population that is young and has high disposable incomes. Mumbai too might have a similar demographic but compared to Gurgaon, it has better and more localized options of eating such as vada pao carts." The meals at this food startup start from 50.

As the number of double earning families has witnessed a growth in India, business enterprises like Lunchbox based out of Chennai has relieved working parents with their delivery of healthy cooked meals at offices and schools.  Every startup in this section focuses on delivering healthy meals.

Amidst how life has been made easier for the working class with these innovative startups, Ganesh has his two cents to offer saying, "The consumer is extremely fickle and so you have to consistently innovate and deliver quality. Once a customer is upset with the food they're not coming back. The Indian consumer is very patient with a lot of categories, but not food."

Retaining the customers is the biggest challenge faced by these startup ventures.
