Mary Kom was born in Kangathei, Manipur on March1, 1983. Though she could not complete her schooling successfully, she was always passionate and had a keen interest in athletics. She initially tried to hide her interest in boxing since it was not considered a suitable sport for women. She did not give up and with her strong mindset she decided to go for a match and won the Manipur state women's boxing championship in 2000 and thus her career became public.
