Asana, by Alumni Facebookers Raises $28 Million Funding

Bangalore: Asana, a startup by Justin Rosenstein and Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz from Silicon Valley, has raised $28 million through financing led by PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel and his Founders Fund as reported by Huffington post.

"This investment allows us to attract the best and brightest designers and engineers" said its co-founder Justin Rosenstein. He said that this would in turn help the company to build on its goal of interacting among its client companies’ employees simple and easier.

Asana had launched the free version of its management software, which makes collaborating of projects an easier task. It had also launched its paid service ‘premium’ software earlier this year. The company said that ‘hundreds’ of customers had upgraded to the premium version but still declined to give the revenue figures.

With the latest round of funding, Asana has raised $38 million from various investors including Benchmark Capital and Andreessen Horowitz. Peter Thiel, who knew Moskovitz and Rosenstein during the Facebook project, had already invested in Asana when it raised the angel round in early 2009. Now, Thiel is joining the board of Asana, through his high-profile Founders Fund investment.

The two founders of Asana were also the alumni members/employees of the giant social-network, Facebook. Moskovitz also co-founded Facebook along with Mark Zuckerberg. Asana took a total different path from social networking. They strongly go with the notion that, they view the company as an alternate to email, personal meetings, spread sheets and physical whiteboards. "That's what we see as our competition, replacing those technologies" said Rosenstein.
