T20 World Cup Squad 2024: Rohit Sharma Leads India with Pant, Samson on Board
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has declared Rohit Sharma as the captain for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in the West Indies and United States. Hardik Pandya has been named his deputy. Before the selection, there was much discussion about whether Sanju Samson or Rishabh Pant would secure the wicket-keeper position. However, the selection committee decided to include both players in the final squad of 15.
Considering their current form, Shivam Dube, who has been excelling in the Indian Premier League for the Chennai Super Kings, has earned a spot in the squad. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal are available for the opening positions, while Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav are set to strengthen the middle order.
India has chosen to feature four spin options, with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel serving as the off-spinners, while Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal will handle the leg-spin duties. Leading the pace attack will be Jasprit Bumrah, supported by Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh.
Among the reserves, Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan have been named. India's World Cup journey will kick off with a match against Ireland on June 5, at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Following this, a much-anticipated clash against Pakistan is set for June 9, also at the same venue. India is then slated to face off against USA and Canada on June 12 and 15 respectively.
