- BCCI has approved the India-Pakistan Asia Cup clash, scheduled for September 14, ending speculation over withdrawal.
- The T20-format tournament will feature 8 teams for the first time, aligning with the 2026 T20 World Cup preparations.
- Despite political tensions following the Pahalgam attack, BCCI has not supported a boycott, and the match will proceed.
Amid rising uncertainty, the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan clash in the 2025 Asia Cup has been officially confirmed to go ahead as scheduled. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has given its approval during the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, according to sources, effectively putting to rest any speculation of a withdrawal.
The ACC released the full schedule on Saturday, announcing that India and Pakistan placed in Group A alongside hosts UAE and Oman will face off on September 14. The tournament will be hosted in the UAE and played in the T20 format in alignment with the upcoming 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.
A senior BCCI official told IANS, “The BCCI cannot withdraw from the tournament or the match now. The decision was agreed upon after the ACC meeting. Since India is the host nation, nothing can be changed at this stage”.
Tensions had risen following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, leading to India Champions, led by Yuvraj Singh, refusing to play against Pakistan Champions in the World Championship of Legends in Birmingham. The match was subsequently canceled by the organisers due to political sensitivities.
Despite this backdrop, the BCCI has not made any public statement suggesting a boycott of Pakistan in the Asia Cup. The ACC President and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed the tournament dates on Saturday, ending months of speculation.
The 17th edition of the Asia Cup will see eight teams compete for the first time. Group B features Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. The top two teams from each group will move on to the Super Four, followed by the final raising the possibility of up to three India-Pakistan encounters in the tournament.
India enters the tournament as the defending champion, having defeated Sri Lanka in the 2023 final. The clash with Pakistan promises to be one of the biggest highlights of the 2025 cricket calendar.
