Tips to Keep in Mind While You Call in Sick to Work?

Ever called in sick to work? Usually, what to do you do? call, text or email? You would have wondered how to call in sick what to say. If you are feeling unwell, unable to make it into work, what do you think is the best way to inform your boss? Is it just by dropping a WhatsApp text, how cool is your boss? Let’s check out the etiquette of calling in sick to work.

According to Office for National Statistics, in UK, an estimated 141.4 million working days were lost because of sickness in 2018. However, the most likely to phone in ill were women, older workers, people with long-term health conditions, part-time workers, and those in organisations with 500 or more employees. The most common reasons for absence were the minor illness such as coughs, colds and other problems like back and neck pain, and also stress, anxiety and depression. Scientifically, it is not something to feel bad about as it is like a courtesy for your colleagues by containing the spread of the illness that might be contagious.

According to Ben Willmott, Head of public policy at CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development, “You need to make sure you follow your employer’s policy. “The best way is the method that has been agreed by your workplace. In some instances people will be required to call and try and speak to their line manager, while in others an email or text will be fine”. [Source: Huffpost UK]

Other factors such as, time at which you are calling in matters as, typically a phone call is best and if it is outside the official working hours, it’s better to send an email by mentioning the reason. Also, it is recommended to inform your manager/boss as soon as you decide not to come to work as you are sick.

One will always have the tendency to go into detail about the illness to convince the manager or boss. But, it’s a big no-no, as they don’t want to know the number of times you’ve rushed to the bathroom. It is advised to always keep it short and to point. Providing reason will help your boss to know about the support you might need in future.

However, there are several don’ts in calling in sick for work. First, don’t wait until you’re due in to let your employer that you’re sick. Secondly, never ever let your colleague to leave a message with your manager that you’re coming to office. Lastly, don’t assume that your manager will know that you’re sick, as you were sick the day before, it’s really important to keep your boss up-to-date.
