The Master Story behind Tesla's Model 3 Launch

The car would be priced at $35,000 and delivery would begin in the second half of 2017. Musk emphasized that, even if the car is bought with no additional features/options, it would still promise most of the features of Tesla’s previous models. Regarding the production strategy that Tesla has in place, Musk mentions that the factory at Fremont currently produces 500,000 cars per year. To ramp up the li-ion battery production required, Tesla is currently building and simultaneously operating, a behemoth factory, what it terms as the ‘Gigafactory’. As musk puts it, “It would have the largest footprint of any building of any kind. Volumetrically, it would only be second to the Boeing factory in Washington”. The gigafactory would produce more li-ion batteries than all other factories in the world combined which would translate to 50 giga watt-hours per year in production.

Each of Musk’s ventures in a way stands for the betterment of humanity. SpaceX: To revolutionize space technology with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets. “I’d like to die on Mars, just not on impact” he once said. SolarCity: Making clean energy available at a cost lesser than today’s polluting sources. The Hyperloop initiative: a conceptual high-speed transportation system aimed at revolutionizing public travel. And then the Open AI initiative who’s the name is in itself self-explanatory. His past ventures include PayPal, Zip2 and X.com.

The master plan had stretched to more than 10 years, a buy in of time for the sake of perfection that would eventually lead the change for the better. The same could be expected from all of Musk’s ventures, after all this just the tip of the iceberg that has been revealed to us.
