Meta is stepping up efforts to protect older adults from rising online scams. The company has introduced a range of new safety features and awareness campaigns across its platforms, WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. It focuses on helping seniors stay safe online.
On WhatsApp, users now get screen-sharing alerts when trying to share their screen during a video call with unknown contacts. This helps prevent scammers from tricking users into giving away sensitive data like bank details or OTPs.
Messenger is testing AI-powered scam detection, which flags suspicious messages from new contacts. Users can review recent chats, and if a scam is detected, they’ll get tips on spotting fraud and options to block or report the sender.
Meta has also added secure login with Passkeys, allowing users to log in using a fingerprint, face scan, or PIN. Facebook and Instagram now guide users through Security Checkup, while WhatsApp offers a Privacy Checkup to help people control who can contact them.

In India, Meta has teamed up with the Department of Telecommunications to expand its Scams Se Bacho campaign. This includes multilingual videos that teach seniors how to spot and report scams. It also continues to support Saksham Senior, a programme that runs workshops to help older adults use tech safely.
So far this year, Meta has taken down over 8 million scam-linked accounts and removed more than 21,000 fake pages impersonating customer support.
Meta advises users to stay cautious, avoid sharing personal information, and double-check messages that seem urgent or secretive.
