OpenAI Adds Parental Controls to ChatGPT to Protect Teen Users
  • Parents can link accounts with their teens for better safety
  • Controls help limit usage and reduce sensitive content
  • Both parent and teen must agree to activate

OpenAI has introduced new parental controls in ChatGPT to make the platform safer for teenage users. The feature allows parents and teens to link their accounts, giving parents the ability to set usage limits, adjust features, and tailor the ChatGPT experience to fit their family’s needs. These controls are designed to provide stronger safeguards for teens while giving parents the tools to manage how their children use the AI.

The settings stay active until they are manually turned off and are currently available for all ChatGPT users on the web, with a mobile rollout planned soon. Parents can reduce sensitive content to protect teens from graphic or potentially harmful material, which is enabled by default when the accounts are linked. They can also set quiet hours to restrict usage during certain times, control whether ChatGPT remembers past chats to provide personalized responses, and enable or disable features like voice mode and image generation. Additionally, parents can decide if conversations can be used to improve OpenAI’s models.

Importantly, parents do not have routine access to their teen’s chat history. However, in rare cases where the system or trained reviewers detect serious safety risks, parents may be notified with only the information necessary to protect their child. To activate these parental controls, both the parent and the teen must accept the invitation to link their accounts.
