Meta introduces AI surprise match feature to enhance dating experience
- Meta introduces an AI-powered assistant and a surprise match feature called Meet Cute to Facebook Dating.
- The AI helps users find more personalized matches and improve their profiles.
- Meta aims to keep up with rivals like Tinder and Hinge by adding smart dating tools.
In a fresh bid to spice up online romance, Meta is rolling out AI powered features on Facebook Dating, including a virtual dating assistant and a surprise match tool called Meet Cute. The move brings Facebook’s dating service closer in line with industry leaders like Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble, who have already embraced AI to improve user experience.
The new AI assistant is designed to help users search more specifically for potential matches. Instead of just swiping, daters can ask for something like a ‘Brooklyn girl in tech’ or get tips to improve their profiles. It’s all about making the search feel smarter and more personal.
In addition, Meta is launching Meet Cute, a feature aimed at solving the problem of ‘swipe fatigue’. Once a week, users will receive a surprise match selected by the app’s algorithm taking the pressure off endless browsing and offering a fresh way to meet someone new.
While Facebook Dating has seen a 10% growth in matches among users aged 18 to 29 over the past year, it still trails far behind giants like Tinder, which boasts around 50 million daily users, and Hinge, with 10 million. But with hundreds of thousands of new profiles being created every month, Meta sees opportunity for growth, especially by tapping into AI.

The push mirrors broader industry trends. Match Group, the parent company of Tinder and Hinge, has already partnered with OpenAI and introduced tools like AI powered photo selectors and profile assistants. Bumble has also explored AI features, including future concepts where AI ‘concierges’ might go on virtual dates before users meet in real life.
With these new tools, Meta is signaling that it's serious about evolving Facebook Dating into a smarter, more engaging platform that keeps up with how modern love is changing.
