- Lakshya Sen wins Australian Open Super 500 in straight games
- He Becomes second Indian to claim a BWF World Tour title this season
- Defeats Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 21-15, 21-11 in a dominant 38 minute final
Lakshya Sen ended a tough stretch on the international circuit with a strong comeback, winning his first title of the season at the Australian Open Super 500 in Sydney on Sunday. The 24-year-old Indian star defeated Japan’s Yushi Tanaka in straight games, sealing the men’s singles final 21-15, 21-11 in just 38 minutes.
This win makes Lakshya only the second Indian shuttler to secure a BWF World Tour crown this year, following Ayush Shetty’s Super 300 victory at the U.S. Open. The Commonwealth Games champion last lifted a title at the Syed Modi International in 2024, and this marks his first major win since the Canada Open the same year.
Facing world No. 26 Tanaka, who has already won two Super 300 titles this season, Lakshya delivered a clinical performance. He showed sharp control at the net, precise placements, and clean attacking strokes, never allowing the Japanese shuttler to settle.
Lakshya started strong, capitalizing on Tanaka’s early errors to take an early lead. Backed by loud Indian support in the arena, he maintained pressure with fast, flat exchanges and powerful cross-court strokes. Tanaka tried to respond with his trademark smashes but struggled with consistency.

In the second game, Lakshya’s dominance grew as he pushed ahead with accurate drives and smart judgment at the backline. Tanaka continued to make unforced errors, helping Lakshya build a decisive lead. A flurry of smashes brought the Indian to match point, and he closed out the final with a sharp cross-court return.
The win brings relief and momentum for Lakshya after a challenging period following his fourth-place finish at the Paris Olympics.
