TV Loses Charm Among Indian Youth

Bangalore: Various social networking sites and mobiles seem to have replaced TV as the youth’s chosen mode of entertainment. Student’s today are spending more than an hour online daily, and using the internet not only as a mode of connect through chat, but 74 percent use it for academic research, according to a recent TCS Survey.

As many as 85 percent of the high school students use Facebook and only 0.71 percent use television for entertainment, according to the survey. About 12,300 high school students across 12 cities represent Gen Y in this survey. The TCS Gen Y survey 2011-2012 was held in cities like Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, Kolkatta, Bhubneshwar, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune.

According to the survey, Facebook was the clear favorite among students in metro cities. Students from other cities like Kochi, Lucknow, Pune and Ahmedabad preferred using Orkut, Hi5 and ibibo.

“A combination of more bandwidth, availability of smart devices and the surging popularity of social networks is changing the way India’s high school students conduct their academic and social lives,” said N Chandrasekaran, MD AND CEO, TCS.
