Tesla Begins Hiring in India for Expansion Plans
Tesla Inc. has started recruitment in India, a clear pointer of its ready market entry following a meeting of its CEO, Elon Musk, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the U.S.
The electric car behemoth has announced vacancies for 13 positions, ranging from customer-facing to back-end roles, on LinkedIn. A minimum of five jobs like service technician and advisory positions are to be found in both Mumbai and Delhi, while others like customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist are posted under Mumbai.
Tesla has been in contact with India long enough but had held back earlier because of high import tariff. But India has now cut the basic customs duty on expensive cars above $40,000 from 110% to 70%, making it more feasible to enter.
India's electric vehicle market is still in its nascent stage as compared to China, where 11 million electric vehicles were sold last year, while India's sales came close to 100,000 units. However, Tesla views a chance to offset declining worldwide sales, as it recently recorded its first year-over-year decline in EV sales in more than a decade.
Tesla’s India hiring comes after Modi’s discussions with Musk and former U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington. Following the meetings, Trump announced that India had agreed to negotiate trade terms and enhance U.S. military purchases, including potential F-35 fighter jet acquisitions.
Musk's business activities have increasingly become interlinked with politics. His involvement with Trump's government has been a subject of concern regarding whether his talks with Modi were as a private businessman or in relation to his governmental connections.
At the same time, Musk's other business operations are still widening their international presence. Italy confirmed negotiations with Musk's SpaceX last month on secure telecommunications for its government, an action after Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met Trump in Florida.
