Scindia Unveils India's First Green Hydrogen Plant in Stainless Steel
Union Steel Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia virtually inaugurated India's inaugural Green Hydrogen Plant in the stainless steel sector at Jindal Stainless Limited in Haryana's Hisar. This groundbreaking project is recognized as the world’s first off-grid green hydrogen plant for the stainless steel industry, incorporating rooftop and floating solar units, as per a statement from the Steel Ministry.
The state-of-the-art green hydrogen facility has set ambitious goals, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by up to 2,700 metric tonnes annually and an impressive 54,000 tons of CO2 emissions over the next two decades. Minister Scindia emphasized India's commitment to a green and sustainable future, encouraging companies and state governments to prioritize green growth and jobs in line with the target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070.
Highlighting the project's alignment with the government's vision, Scindia noted that it not only supports a sustainable future but also generates valuable employment opportunities, showcasing the potential of responsible industrial practices.
The minister urged industry stakeholders to adopt clean technologies actively, contributing to India's transformative journey towards a greener economy and fostering a conscientious industrial landscape. He underscored the government's efforts in establishing robust national green policies, including setting up 13 task forces for various aspects of green steel production and implementing the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy to enhance domestically generated scrap availability.
Scindia also celebrated India's progress in the steel sector, transitioning from a net importer to a net exporter, with aspirations to become the world's largest producer of crude steel. He highlighted the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), launched last year with a budget of around Rs 20,000 crore, aiming to position India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage, and export. The mission also supports pilot projects in the steel sector with a budget of around Rs 500 crore until FY 2029-30.
The minister concluded by acknowledging the government's commitment to crucial sectors, as reflected in the Interim Union Budget, which allocated an additional 11 per cent outlay for infrastructure development, emphasizing sectors crucial for growth.
