President Droupadi Murmu praised the remarkable growth of India’s space sector as 'extraordinary' during the country’s first-ever National Space Day celebration. The event commemorates the successful landing of the ‘Vikram’ Lander on the Moon’s surface on August 23 last year.
Speaking at the event held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, President Murmu highlighted India’s significant space achievements, from the successful Mars mission accomplished with limited resources to the launch of over 100 satellites in a single mission. She commended the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientists for their 'remarkable achievements' in the space sector, noting their efficient use of resources.
“The progress of India's space sector is extraordinary. From Mars missions to launching a record number of satellites, our achievements have been impressive”, the President said. She emphasized that ISRO’s contributions have extended beyond space, benefiting the country’s social and economic development.
President Murmu underlined the importance of space exploration, describing it as a 'challenging task' that enhances human capabilities and turns imagination into reality. She pointed out that advancements in space research have driven progress in various sectors, including health, transportation, security, energy, and information technology.
The President also highlighted the rapid growth of start-ups in India’s space sector following its opening to private players. “The number of start-ups has grown from just one to nearly 300”, she noted, adding that this expansion offers young talent new opportunities to innovate and contribute.
President Murmu specifically commended Agnikul Cosmos for successfully launching a single-piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine-powered rocket, marking a world-first achievement.
Looking ahead, the President expressed confidence in India’s continued progress in space science and setting new benchmarks. However, she cautioned about the growing challenge of space debris, which poses risks to future missions. She lauded India’s commitment to making all its space missions debris-free by 2030.
President Murmu’s remarks underscored India’s determination to remain at the forefront of global space exploration while addressing emerging challenges to sustain progress in the sector.
