Isha Foundation Launches Free Cremation Services for BPL Families in Tamil Nadu
  • Isha Foundation starts free cremation services for BPL families in Tamil Nadu.
  • Currently manages 17 crematoriums with the state; 3 more to be added.
  • Services focus on dignity, tradition, and compassionate support.

Isha Foundation has launched free cremation services for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families across Tamil Nadu, aiming to support households that struggle to afford final rites. Tamil Nadu’s Municipal Administration Minister, K. N. Nehru, inaugurated the initiative in Chennai.

The Foundation already operates 17 gas crematoriums in partnership with the state government and will soon take charge of three additional facilities. These crematoriums are located across Chennai, Vellore, Thanjavur, and several parts of Coimbatore district, including Nanjundapuram, Veerakeralam, Thudiyalur, Podanur, Vellalore, Alandurai, Thondamuthur, Karamadai, and Goundampalayam.

According to Maa Gurudasi from the Isha Kayantha Sthanam team, the Foundation has been managing crematoriums for nearly 15 years under the guidance of Sadhguru. She said the approach combines traditional practices with a strong emphasis on service, not commercial gain. “We have revived ancient death rituals with a powerful energy basis and work with the intent of helping families during a difficult time”, she said.

Staff members are trained to handle every step with care, ensuring respect, dignity, and emotional comfort for grieving families. Each facility also includes a separate mandapam where families can perform traditional rituals if they choose.

Isha Foundation plans to expand this model across more states in the coming years. The goal is to make dignified, accessible, and compassionate cremation services available to all, especially those with limited financial resources.
