India, New Zealand to Boost ties in Pharma, Agriculture Sectors
India and New Zealand are intensifying their economic ties by focusing on key sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and processed foods. This move was highlighted during a recent visit to New Zealand by a delegation led by India's Commerce Secretary, Sunil Barthwal. The visit, which took place on April 26-27, featured productive discussions between Barthwal and New Zealand's Minister for Trade, Todd McClay, as well as the 11th India-New Zealand Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting.
Both nations deliberated on establishing working groups to delve into specific areas like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, food processing, storage, and transportation. Notably, they explored enhancing collaboration in pharmaceuticals and medical devices, aiming to streamline regulatory processes and ensure quality standards. The potential for increased medicine sourcing from India and cooperation in the medical device domain were also key talking points.
Furthermore, discussions extended to the horticulture sector, with a focus on enhancing productivity and quality in areas such as kiwi fruit production and dairy farming. The establishment of working groups will facilitate regular reviews of progress and recommendations in these sectors.
Addressing bilateral trade concerns, the talks covered issues like market access, non-tariff barriers, and sanitary and phytosanitary measures, particularly concerning products such as grapes, okra, and mangoes. The services sector emerged as a focal point, with both countries showing keen interest in expanding business-to-business and people-to-people contacts. Efforts to bridge skill gaps and improve mobility through capacity building were also emphasized.
Overall, the discussions underscored a shared commitment to deepening economic cooperation and leveraging each other's strengths for mutual benefit. By fostering collaboration across various sectors and addressing trade barriers, India and New Zealand aim to enhance their bilateral trade relations and create opportunities for sustained growth and prosperity.
