A final-year computer science engineering student at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has created history by securing the highest-ever placement package at the institute. Twenty-one-year-old Edward Nathan Varghese has received a Rs 2.5 crore job offer from Optiver, a leading global trading firm headquartered in the Netherlands.
The offer marks the highest salary package at IIT Hyderabad since its establishment in 2008. Edward will join Optiver as a software engineer in July 2026. He received the offer after successfully converting a two-month summer internship into a pre-placement offer, outperforming another shortlisted candidate during the selection process.
Speaking about his achievement, Edward credited the IIT ecosystem for his success, highlighting the institute’s flexible curriculum and strong emphasis on coding and competitive programming from the first year itself. According to media reports, Optiver was the first and only company he interviewed with during the placement season.
Edward was born and raised in Hyderabad and completed his schooling in Bengaluru from Classes 7 to 12. He secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 1100 in JEE Main and 558 in JEE Advanced in 2022. In addition to his engineering achievements, Edward also excelled in management aptitude, scoring an impressive 99.96 percentile in the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2025, with an all-India rank of 120.
Beyond academics, Edward has played an active leadership role at IIT Hyderabad. As per his LinkedIn profile, he served as the Overall Head of the Office of Career Services, where he led a core team of eight student managers and coordinated with nearly 250 student coordinators to manage placements and internships. Earlier, he worked as an Internship Cell Coordinator for around 11 months.
Sharing his interests, Edward said he is deeply passionate about algorithms, competitive programming, finance, and management, and is keen to explore opportunities that combine these fields.
Both his parents, who are engineers, expressed immense pride in his achievement. Until now, the highest package at IIT Hyderabad stood at Rs 1.1 crore in 2017, making Edward’s offer a significant milestone for the institute.
