  • Adani Group and Bhutan officially launch the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project
  • Druk Green Power Corporation holds majority stake in the joint venture
  • Project strengthens India-Bhutan cooperation in clean and sustainable energy

The Adani Group has officially started work on the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydropower Project in Bhutan, marking an important step in the growing energy partnership between the two sides. The foundation stone ceremony was held in Thimphu and was attended by Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay along with Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.

The project is being developed as a joint venture between Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) and the Adani Group. Under the agreement, DGPC will hold a 51 per cent stake, while Adani Group will own the remaining 49 percent. This structure ensures Bhutan retains majority ownership while benefiting from Adani’s expertise in large infrastructure projects.

The Wangchhu project is the first initiative under a larger agreement signed in May 2025, where both partners committed to jointly develop 5,000 MW of hydropower capacity in Bhutan. With an estimated investment of around Rs 60 billion, the project will include power generation facilities and supporting infrastructure. Construction is expected to be completed within five years of the start of work.

Sharing his thoughts on social media, Gautam Adani described the project as a major milestone in the India–Bhutan energy relationship. He thanked Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay for attending the ceremony and said the partnership is based on sustainability, trust, and long-term value.

Adani also highlighted his association with Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City, calling it a forward-looking initiative inspired by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck’s vision for mindful and sustainable development. The Wangchhu project is expected to play a key role in boosting clean energy production and economic growth in Bhutan.
