Google Introduces Tools to Boost India Elections and Tackle AI-Generated Content
In a bid to bolster the integrity of the upcoming general elections in India, Google has announced a multifaceted strategy aimed at providing high-quality information, thwarting platform abuse, and aiding users in navigating AI-generated content. The tech giant is collaborating closely with the Election Commission of India (ECI), offering users easy access to crucial voting information on Google Search in both English and Hindi.
To curb potential misuse, Google is implementing stringent measures for advertisers running election ads on its platforms. Advertisers must undergo identity verification, present a pre-certificate issued by the ECI or an authorized entity, and include in-ad disclosures that transparently indicate the source of funding for each election ad.
In a move to combat misinformation, Google is enforcing long-standing ad policies that prohibit the promotion of false claims that could erode trust or undermine election participation. The company is also introducing restrictions on election-related queries for which its Gemini AI will return responses.
Addressing concerns about synthetic content, Google has embedded watermarking, utilizing Google DeepMind's 'SynthID', in every image generated through its products. Furthermore, YouTube will soon mandate creators to disclose when they produce realistic altered or synthetic content, accompanied by a visible label for viewers.
Google is actively leveraging AI models and human reviewers to detect and remove content that violates its policies, particularly focusing on misinformation related to elections. The company's AI models are enhancing abuse-fighting efforts, supported by a dedicated team of local experts fluent in all major Indian languages working around the clock to provide context.
Acknowledging the pivotal role of journalism in combating misinformation, Google has empowered newsrooms and journalists through initiatives like the Google News Initiative Training Network and the Fact Check Explorer tool. In preparation for the General Election, Google is extending support to Shakti, the India Election Fact-Checking Collective, a consortium of news publishers and fact-checkers committed to debunking misinformation.
