FM Sitharaman Unveils PM Internship Scheme App to Increase Employability of Youths
The Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the Minister of State for Road Transport and Corporate Affairs Harsh Malhotra launched the mobile app of PM Internship Scheme (PMIS) at Parliament. The programme is designed to increase access to internship opportunities among India's young people while providing more industry involvement.
Sitharaman clarified that the initiative would narrow the gap between class room education and industry demands by providing youth with on-job work experience to enhance their employability. She requested India's best 500 organizations to participate and noted that participation from their end is critical towards nation-building as well as generating a pool of skilled talent. Seconding her opinion, Malhotra emphasized that the PMIS application would facilitate increased involvement from young recruits across the country.
The application has a simple interface, enabling easy navigation and Aadhaar-based facial authentication for registration. Applicants are encouraged to search for opportunities by location and industry, monitor applications through customized dashboards, and view real-time status updates. A support team has been specifically established to help users throughout the experience.
In order to promote greater participation, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs has launched a referral program under which registered users can refer potential candidates and get rewarded. The program is likely to increase the coverage of the internship programme considerably.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs will also set up a PMIS facilitation centre in Kolkata, jointly with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The CII, running 47 model career centres, will place PMIS cells within them to assist candidates in filing their applications.
The government, through this programme, intends to establish a formalized internship ecosystem, making industry-academia collaboration better and improving jobs for India's youth.
