FIFA World Cup: Five Memorable Semi Finals


 

4 July 1990: West Germany vs. England in Italy

In the 14th the FIFA World Cup 116 teams were participated and 22 qualified. After this world cup, the back pass rule was introduced to avoid time wasting and overly defensive play.

In 1990, England reached the semifinals for the first time since 1966. In the first half none of the team converted any goal and the score was 0-0 at the end of first half. In the 60th minute, Andreas Brehme’s free kick shot took a vicious deflection off Paul Parker and the ball fell in Parker’s won net.

West Germany was leading and 10 minutes were left for the game. Before 10 minutes England equalize with Gary Lineker’s goal and extra time started. Once again, both the teams started attacking for goal but none of them scored by the end of extra time. The teams were tied in tie breaker and penalty shootout was the next move.

Lineker and Brehme converted their goals in the first round of the shootout followed by Beardsley and Matthaus. Exactly same happened in third round by Platt and Riedle. In the fourth round Illgner saved the goal for West Germany and Thon converted against England. It was the end of the match and West Germany won with the score of 3-4.

West Germany also won the World Cup.
