NSG is the Central contingency 'Zero-Error Force' to handle anti-terrorist activities in all its manifestations. Equipped and trained to handle specific situations, it is hence deployed only in exceptional circumstances to thwart serious acts of terrorism. It comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

As early as 1984, the Central Cabinet decided to form a crisis force comprising highly motivated, specially geared, and well-trained personnel to tackle the different manifestations of terrorism.

National Security Guard

The National Security Guard was formed on October 16, 1984, after the Operation Blue Star. The Golden Temple of Amritsar was the focus of the military action from which Sikh extremists were to be flushed out. The operation was successful and finally gave India a sense of purpose in having a specifically committed force that could cope with terrorist attacks. A bill for the establishment of NSG was presented to the parliament in August 1986 and received the President's assent on September 22, 1986, and NSG came into existence formally from that date.
