Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa and Former CEO of Niti Aayog, has stepped down from public service after a distinguished 45-year career. Announcing his resignation on June 16, Kant shared a heartfelt message on social media, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for their trust and support.
“After 45 years of dedicated government service, I have made the decision to embrace new opportunities and move forward in life”, Kant wrote on X and LinkedIn. He expressed gratitude for the chance to lead developmental initiatives and contribute to India's growth.
Kant, a 1980-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, began his journey in Kerala, working on the renowned 'God’s Own Country' tourism campaign and projects to revitalize public spaces like Mananchira Maidan in Calicut. His early experiences focused on grassroots development and improving community infrastructure.
As Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, he was instrumental in launching landmark initiatives such as Make-in-India, Ease of Doing Business, and Startup India. Later, as Niti Aayog CEO and G20 Sherpa, he played a pivotal role in shaping India’s global economic narrative.
Kant now plans to support startups, innovation ecosystems, and think tanks. “I look forward to contributing to India’s transformational journey from a different platform”, he stated, signaling a shift to mentoring and policy support roles beyond government corridors.
