Women Still Caged When it Comes to Job Selection: Report

BENGALURU:  When the entire world is speaking about equal opportunities and rights for women, a gender report shared exclusively with Times Of India (TOI) by recruitment consultant TeamLease unveils the existence of societal stereotypes and patriarchal domination that still continues to influence women’s selection of career and education.

The report states that although the percentage of women enrolling in higher education is greater than men at graduation level but the  participation rate is significantly lower in streams like BTech, BE and PhD. As a result of lesser proportion of women enrolling into technical, vocational and managerial education compared with men, the chances of women pursuing a worthwhile career in these fields gets hindered, reports Namrata Singh for TOI.

The statistics unveiled in the report highlights the fact that the society still categorizes jobs on the basis of gender. Being conditioned to believe that certain specific jobs are suitable for them, women tend to choose the field of education or job that the society has categorized for them. Moreover, the tendency to leave job or take a break after marriage or having children exists among urban women.

It has also been observed that compared to urban women, rural women are found to be less affected by their marital status with regard to continuation of their work as compared to the urban woman as the need for financial security is more in case of a rural woman than an urban woman. Also, rural women participation in labour force is more in numbers than urban women.
