Pakistan Surpasses India in Research

Bangalore: Pakistan surpasses India in research and has more researchers for a million people in comparison with India, said a recent United Nations study. Pakistan has 162 researchers for a million people, while India has just 135, reported Chetan Chauhan for Hindustan Times.

However, in terms of taking research to a logical and innovative end through patent registration, Pakistan is not even close to India. India has five patents for a million people, while Pakistan records for just one. The reason for this cited by the UN report is that Pakistan could have poor technological infrastructure compared to India. Hence, in spite of the Pakistani youth showing more interest than Indians in science and technology it lags behind.

But India doesn’t fare too well in comparison with numerous nations with slower economic growth rate. Sri Lanka (24.2) records for three times more patents for a million than India (5.1), while Thailand (11.2) has more patents and researchers per million people than India.

It was noted that China registers for over a 100 patents for a million people and the U.S. with 707 patents for a million people. The two nations are among top scientific countries in the world after Japan and South Korea that have over 1,000 patents for a million people.
