Nations Where Slavery is Most Prevalent


Bangalore: The world, although have tasted many facets of development, there are still many social problems that are deeply rooted. Modern Slavery is one such stigma that still exists in almost all the countries. Recently, the ‘Global Slavery Index’ report by the Walk Free Foundation ranked 162 countries by estimating the number of people in each nation affected by a range of practices including forced and bonded labour, human trafficking, forced marriages, and the use of children in the military. Here are the names of the countries that popped up as the nations with highest per capita slavery.

1. Mauritania:
Mauritania, a West African nation is ranked at the top spot in the slavery Index. In this country, slavery is a deep-rooted phenomenon which the national government has constantly tried to abolish. Slavery is a historical practice in Mauritania and primarily takes the form of chattel slavery, meaning that adult slaves and their children are the property of their masters. It is estimated that there are around 140,000 – 160,000 people enslaved in Mauritania, a country with a population of only 3.8 million. This ranking also reflects high levels of child marriage, and to a lesser extent, human trafficking.
