Most Polluting Nations in the World

Bangalore: The world today is no more a safe place to live in. With the ever-increasing emissions of carbon dioxide the world is now turning into a dangerous territory where people will witness the worst consequences of higher temperatures, melting ice and rising seas. This is mainly due to the burning of fossil fuels that have grown considerably since the Industrial Revolution started. More infrastructure projects, increase in goods transportation, rise in automobiles sale are some of the major factors that increase the demand for fuel resulting in environmental pollution. The major polluting countries are usually those nations with the largest industries, major production capabilities and most importantly, the biggest populations. Here are the 10 most polluting countries in the world, as listed by Earth Policy Institute.

1. China:

China tops the list of the world’s most polluting countries. Since the country is growing rapidly, it heavily depends on fossil fuels. Since the year 2007, the carbon dioxide emissions grew by 44 percent which further increased to 2,395 million tons in 2012. As per the World Bank, out of the world's 20 most polluted cities, 16 are from China. In the beginning of this year, air pollution rose up in many northern cities during the winter. Air qualities in Beijing are classified as "hazardous" by The United States Embassy that examined air quality in China.
