Most Polluting Nations in the World
2. United States:
The United States of America, one of the world’s super powers, is the second most polluting nation in the world. This country which had environmental issues since the start of Industrial Revolution emits 1,403 million tons carbon dioxide every year. U.S., which is also among those countries that pioneered for enacting laws that help in cutting down pollution, enacted a series of Clean Air Acts in 1960s, 1970s and 1990s to strengthen the regulation of air pollution and introduced new standards to measure air pollution.
3. India:
India, one of the most populous nations and a home to over a billion of people takes the third position on this list. Over the last five years, that is, from 2007 to 2012, the country’s emissions have increased by 43 percent and touched 596 million tons of CO2. Though the country emits less greenhouse gasses compared to other countries on the list, the air pollution is very high mainly due to burning of wood, fuel adulteration, vehicle emission and traffic congestion. According to World Health Organization, Ludhiana, Kanpur and Delhi are some of the most polluted Indian cities. India had also adopted emission standard of Bharat Stange IV for vehicles in the year 2005.
