Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi, one of the pioneers of non-violent resistance, which he called 'Satyagraha', is deservingly the first leader in focus in our list. He shook the very foundation of the mighty British Raj in India without taking up arms and was instrumental in the downfall of the colonial rule the country in 1947. Officially embraced as the 'Father of the Nation' by the government and the people of India, he is often referred to as 'Mahatma', which means, ‘A Great Soul’. His birthday, 2nd of October, is celebrated in India and around the world as the International Day of Non-Violence.
