Kill Your Daughter if She Elopes: DIG Suggests

Honour killing

Bangalore: In an ironic turn of events, a high ranked police officer from Uttar Pradesh has been caught, making outrageous remarks encouraging honour killing. This comes barely a year after the Supreme Court said the crime deserves death penalty.

When the father of a minor girl, who is suspected to have either eloped or abducted, approached Saharanpur deputy inspector general (DIG) Satish Kumar Mathur, the DIG spoke in a way that implied the father should either kill himself or his daughter. The State government has asked DGP AC Sharma for a report on Mathur’s comments.

The family, which suspects the girl to have been abducted, had approached the DIG seeking help.  Upon hearing the complaint, the officer said, “If your daughter has eloped then you should be ashamed and end your life. I would have killed my sister if she had eloped or else would have committed suicide.”

Additional director general of police Jamohan Yadav said Mathur has denied making those comments.
