Indian Government To Launch $20 Billion Food Welfare Plan By December.

BENGALURU: Indian Government is planning to roll out its 2000 Crores ($20 billion) food welfare plan by December through which 67 percent of Indian population, i.e., 1.2 billion people will get access to rice and wheat.

Earlier this year, Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, designated 1.24 trillion for food subsidies."Finally most states have agreed to implement the NFSA by December, after the latest deadline ends in September," said Ram Vilas Paswan, after a meeting with his counterparts from different states.

The National Food Security Act (NFSA) was approved in August 2013 by the previous Congress-led Government and recommended all 29 states and the seven union territories to implement the act within a year. But only 11 states introduced the act, after missing several deadlines.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is implementing this expensive food welfare plan approved by his predecessor Manmohan Singh. The government is now trying to restrain in overall subsidies to focus on investment in manufacturing and infrastructure.
