Indian Doctors Strangely Have Fewer Daughters: Report

Bangalore: As per the 2011 census India shows an improved sex-ratio in the last decade. However, a new report reveals some shocking details.  It is a well known fact that sex selection prevails in almost all the strata of the Indian society and adding to this horror is the reality that many doctors across the country are promoting and pushing gender-selection favouring the male child. It is an unethical, illegal yet a lucrative business for the physicians. But is it possible that doctors are practicing it in their own family?

As per a recent study published in the American Journal ‘Demography’ and labeled ‘Skewed Sex Ratios in India: Physician Heal Thyself’ it seems to be true that the number of girl children are curbed as compared to the number of boys in their family. The survey conducted recorded its data from 946 nuclear families with 1,624 children. Either one or both parents in the surveyed family were doctors and students between 1980 and 1985 at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, as reported by Tejas Mehta for NDTV.

As per the survey the sex ratio among children in these families was 907 girls per 1,000 boys. The ratio is below the national average of 914. In families with one child, the number dropped further to 900 girls per 1000 boys.
