India Among World's 10 Most Dangerous Countries For Journalists


BANGALORE: In many countries, journalism is a very dangerous profession; in Syria, Iran, and Mexico, to name a few, this is particularly the case.
According to an International News Safety Institute’s annual report entitled ‘Killing the Messenger’, 134 journalists and media staff were killed last year while doing their work in 29 countries. However, most of them were targeted deliberately.

Here is the list of 10 deadliest nations for the ‘Fourth Estate’, as compiled by INSI-

10. Mexico:
Mexico is considerably gaining the status of one of the most dangerous places for journalists to work. This is mainly attributed to the ongoing drug war between the Mexican authorities and drug traffickers. Some 22 journalists have been killed and dozens have disappeared, been kidnapped, or exiled since President Felipe Calderon come to power in 2006 and declared war on the traffickers, said INSI report. This country is also among the ones with the highest level of unsolved crimes against the media.
