Anandibai Joshi surpasses the ordinary as she went on to become the first Indian woman to have obtained a degree in western medicine.  A series of misfortune struck her at a youth as she was married off at the age of 9 and conceived a son at the age of 14, who died soon after. She in turn suffered from poor health and the loss of her son had urged her to take up medicine. She then moved to Pennsylvania where she studied at the Women’s Medical College. Shortly after returning to India she began working in the Albert Edward hospital. Anandibai shines as a beacon for girls to attain success.

ASIMAAsima Chatterjee

Asima Chatterjee made herself known in the world of chemistry for her vast contributions to organic chemistry and phytomedicine. Her active role in the development of cancer medicine, anti-epileptic and anti-malarial drugs, earned her the title as the first woman to be titled ‘Doctor of Science’ by an Indian university. She then furthered her studies at the University of Calcutta and compiled several volumes of work on the medicinal plants of the Indian subcontinent. Her achievements traveled far and wide where she was appointed by the president of India as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
