2005: Mumbai

Being situated on the western costal line, Mumbai has always been prone to floods, but was affected worst in 2005. The city’s prior record high rainfall in a 24-hour phase was 575 mm (22.6 inches) in 1974, but the record was broken by the eighth heaviest, ever recorded 24-hour rainfall figure of 944 mm (37.17 inches) that startled the city on 26 July, the day that is still remembered on account of the respective calamity.

Further, the rain poured till next day and 644mm (25.35 inches) was recorded within the period of 12 hours. Subsequently, on 31 July, as a result of intensified rain all the flight services from the Mumbai city were suspended, however the city saw the sun after a week and 1,094 deaths were reported.

2010: Eastern India Storm

In 2010, the eastern part of India suffered the worst storm in the decade that vandalized both Indian and the Bangladeshi regions. The storm lasted for 90 minutes but the destruction caused was severe, particularly, the state of Bihar suffered the highest causalities with 91 deaths, 44 in West Bengal and 4 in Assam. The aftermath proved rigorous than the deaths, since hundreds and thousands were left homeless, as per the reports, 91,000 dwellings were ruined in India.
