Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands)

This Indian region got independence before August 15th, 1947. Being home to the renowned cellular jail, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was a place known for all the inhuman activities, and tortures. Being one of the darkest chapters in Indian history, many notable freedom fighters such as Batukeshwar Dutt, Indu Bhushan Roy and the renowned Savarkar brothers were imprisoned here during that time. The place was a representation of oppression and with unusual turn of events, it became the first part of India to be liberated.

It was Subhash Chandra Bose who hoisted the National Flag on 29th December 1943, and formed the Azad Hind Government with Port Blair as its capital. It was considered as the first independent state of India. Right now, Andaman & the Nicobar Islands are among the seven union territories of India.
