 # 1. Empress of Ireland: (29th May 1914)

The Empress of Ireland is one of the greatest disasters at sea of all time and was nearly unknown as it occurred on the verge of the First World War. The ship sank after colliding with another ship in the St. Lawrence River. This disaster witnessed as greater number casualties than the famed Titanic which sank two years earlier and received all the media attention. It took all but 462 out of a total of 1477 lives on board with her. The main culprit behind this disaster is the fog.
