4.64 Crore Indians and their Prolonged Wait for Clean Drinking Water
Bangalore: “Water, water, everywhere, Nor any drop to drink,” a famous line quoted from S.T. Coleridge’s ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ seems applicable with Indian water scenario at present. This is because, water the main source of human lives are mostly contaminated in India despite its availability everywhere. Millions of people fall prey to waterborne diseases every single day. According to a recent report by Union Ministry of Water Resources, 4.64 crore rural Indians are denied clean drinking water facilities, reports B Sivakumar for TNN.
Most of the urbanites use surface water; whereas in rural areas they mainly depend on bore wells, and other sources like groundwater. Since surface water is stored for over a long period of time, the process of purification takes place naturally. But, in the latter case, artificial and mechanical water purification will have to be employed in order to decrease the risk of contamination.
Many Indian states like Rajasthan, Assam, Bihar and Tamil Nadu are facing the problem of contaminated water more as compared to other parts of the country. 25,500 habitations in Rajasthan followed by Assam with 12,879 rural habitations, Bihar with 10,587 households and 486 habitations in Tamil Nadu are exposed to contaminated water with chemical or bacterial contents in it.
