7. The Tradition of Vedic Chanting

Vedic Chanting is the oldest unbroken oral tradition in existence which is also part of UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The old tradition of Vedas consists of several ‘pathas’ or recitations or ways of chanting mantras. Vedas which have been preserved from the Iron Age comprise Hindu philosophy, myth, poetry and dialogue. The Vedas written in Vedic Sanskrit are practiced in classical Sanskrit after translation. However, only 13 of the 100 ways of recitations are alive in practice today.

8. Ramman Religious Festival of Uttarakhand

18 people play 18 characters, wearing 18 masks to dance on 18 beats to celebrate the 18 puranas in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand without worrying about the caste or creed. This ritual theater is now confined to 1800 people in Saloor and Dungra Villages in Chamoli district.  The performers recite various legends of Rama and others while they sing and dance with masked faces.
