9. Kutiyattam, Sanskrit Theater in Kerala

Kutiyattam, India’s oldest theater form reflects the local traditions of Kerala blended with Sanskrit classicism which focuses on detail and elaboration. It is a theater form that uses seven instruments the important one being Kuzhitalam played by a Nambiar (regional caste). The mystery is that the origin of this dance is not known to any and the art form was just being kept alive by the traditional performers. The performance requires rigorous training and practice, which involves breathing exercises, muscle shifts of body and face which is mastered only after 10-14 years of training.

10. Mudiyettu, Ritual Theater and Dance Drama in Kerala

It is Mudiyettu time for people who belong to the Bhagawati cult in the four districts of Kerala after the summer harvest. Mudiyettu is religiously performed by the people for the purification of the community. It is a mythological tale of battle between goddess Kali and demon Darika. Musicians of Mudiyettu are the maestros of Sopana Sangeeth. The figure of Kali is also painted on the floor of the temple and the performers sing specific song describing the goddess from head to toe.
