10 People Whose Works Became More Famous Than Their Names

George de Mestral-Velcro

This is a shining example of how Mother Nature inspires inventions. On a summer day in 1948 de Mestral took his dog along on a hike, they returned covered in burrs from the thistle plants along the trail. Out of curiosity he inspected one of the burrs under microscope to discover small hooks that enabled the burr to cling viciously to the tiny loops of the fabric of his pants. Taking cue from this he designed and marketed his invention in late 1950s as “Velcro-zipperless zipper”. The name is a combination of the French words "velours" and "crochet," translated to English as "velvet" and "hooks."
