4. Cheyenne Mountain Complex Air Force Station, Colo

Located half a mile under a granite mountain, Cheyenne Mountain Complex Air Force Station is the most secured, large underground installation in the world. It consists of 15 steel buildings, laid out in a 4.5 acre grid inside the mountain. It is also protected by its natural cover, mountain of granite (an extremely hard rock). The complex can be accessed through a tunnel and a 30 ton blast doors. To absorb the shock of a nuclear detonation, buildings are suspended on, 1,300 47 steel springs. The buildings store 30 days of supplies and six million gallons of water. It is operated by the USA/Canadian, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), and the U.S. Space Command, which is headquartered in Peterson Air Force Base. The importance of Gibraltar lies in the strait, with the same name, is the gateway of Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. It was a key point in the anti-submarine campaigns in both World Wars. It also provides expert training opportunities in parachuting, diving and tunnel warfare. The streets of Gibraltar holds underneath an extensive 35 mile long tunnel system carved through limestone. On the southern tip of Gibraltar lies the Buffadero Training Center, having two live firing ranges, an obstacle course and a mock village for mimicking warfare in a modern revised environment.
