10 Eccentric Army Bases In The World

6. Raven Rock Mountain Complex, Adams Country, Penn

Constructed during the 1950s by the U.S. after the Soviet Union detonated its first nuclear weapon in 1949.  It is an underground facility. It’s a home to Alternate Joint Communication Centre (AJCC); and also serves as a disaster recovery and Emergency Operational Center (EOC) for several branches of the military. No one can find good details of the construction, layout and the activities of the Raven Rock Mountain Complex (Site-R), as most information are classified. Site-R is not a secret, but details of what lies inside it, is.

7. Lajes Field, Azores, Portugal

It is a Portuguese Air Base, located on the island of Terceira. It is an important refueling station for aircrafts that can’t clear the Atlantic Ocean at one go. In 1953, the U.S. established its first base on this island when it positioned the 1605th Air Base Wing at Lajes. The origin of the island is volcanic. Lajes Field is known as the ’Crossroads of the Atlantic.’ It provides an important mid Atlantic link for U.S. and allied forces to Europe, Africa and the Middle East. As it’s incapable to support more than one airport, Lajes Field is split between civilian and military operations.
