10 Countries with Maximum Press Freedom
Iceland:
Iceland, the Nordic European island country is placed ninth on press freedom index. The media in Iceland are well-developed for a nation of its size. Iceland’s Constitution guarantees absolute freedom of speech, hence Iceland’s media are among the freest in the world. Literature is a favorite pastime of the Icelanders, and so the printed press in the country is pretty well developed. Further, the internet is unrestricted by the government, and is used by around 97 percent of the population.
Sweden:
Sweden rounds off the tenth position on the index. Swedish media has a long tradition dating back to the 1776 law enacting freedom of the press. The press is subsidized by the government and is owned by numerous actors.
It is also noted that the U.S. ranked 32nd on the index, while China fared pretty poorly ranking 173rd and making it in the bottom 10. The bottom three countries continue to be the same as last year, i.e., Turkmenistan, North Korea, and Eritrea, on account of their totalitarian control of the media and mistreatment of journalists. Syria, Somalia, Iran, Vietnam, Cuba, Sudan, and Yemen were the other nations that featured in the bottom 10.
