10 Countries that are Prone to Natural Calamities

Bangalore: Which are the countries that are prone to natural calamities? The British risk analysis firm Maplecroft released a scientific report ranking the top ten countries at extreme risk from natural hazards. These countries are at the highest risks from the threat of natural hazards such as earthquakes and floods. The top 10 countries most at risks are:

Bangladesh:

The geographic location makes Bangladesh vulnerable to natural disasters like floods, drought and cyclones. To a large extent, communities had adapted and developed resilience to changes brought by normal floods. However, severe floods of high magnitude had adverse impact on the economy and even loss of life. Major floods had occurred in Bangladesh in 1987, 1988, 1998, 2004, 2007 and 2012. During each flood, hundreds of people were killed and many crops were damaged. In 2012, at least 100 people were killed and 250,000 people were left stranded by flash floods and landslides in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

The Philippines:

The second country vulnerable to natural hazards is Philippines. The country is also vulnerable to natural disasters like floods and cyclones. The recent floods on August 2012 had created havoc in the country. Reports of torrential rains and cyclone had also hit the city before causing widespread damage to crops and loss of millions of people. The recent floods had affected at least 2.7 million people and had killed at least 66 people.
