Bollywood & Hollywood Unite to Protect Film Content in AI Age
- Global film industries are urging India to tighten copyright laws to stop AI firms from using film content without permission.
- Current Indian copyright laws don’t fully address AI use, prompting a government review.
- Industry leaders demand a licensing model to protect creativity and content ownership.
Hollywood and Bollywood have joined forces to push for stronger copyright protections in India, raising concerns about how AI companies are using film content to train models without permission. As generative AI tools advance, the entertainment industry is worried that copyrighted trailers, scenes, and even pirated content are being scraped without regulation.
India’s existing copyright law, introduced before the AI boom, currently lacks clear rules around the use of copyrighted content for training artificial intelligence. In response, the Indian government has formed a panel to evaluate whether the law needs updating and how to handle the rising legal challenges linked to AI.
The Motion Picture Association (MPA) and the Producers Guild of India are among the key voices asking for a licensing framework, instead of allowing AI firms blanket exemptions. They argue that without strict rules, content creators could lose control over their work, and this could discourage new creative projects.

Both industries stress that content used to train AI models should only be allowed through licensed agreements that respect copyright ownership. This would ensure that artists and studios are fairly compensated and that intellectual property remains protected in the digital age.
The panel’s recommendations are expected soon, at a time when India’s entertainment and tech sectors are growing rapidly and increasingly intersecting.
