Restrictive MDM Offers Paving Way To BYOD Failure?

Bangalore: Restrictive mobile device management (MDM) may lead to the failure of BYOD projects by 2016, reveals Gartner. The prediction was made on the raising need of employees who want to keep their personal and professional data separate.

The BYOD policy can be a threat to both the companies and employees. While it increases the risk of losing important professional data for companies, employees are not allowed to do personal web surfing in these devices linked to their company’s system.

“Whether via a formal BYOD programme, or just via devices coming in the back door and being configured to access corporate systems, the use of consumer technologies in the work environment presents a threat to IT control of endpoint computing resources,” said  Ken Dulaney, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner.

Today, there are many apps for Smartphones with a decreased level of security. Using these same apps for enterprise invites huge risks in security.

“The vast number of mobile apps may imply that mobile is a new revenue stream that will bring riches to many,” Dulaney added. But this is not applicable for all mobile app developers who intend to make a profit. “There are so many applications that are free and that will never directly generate revenue. Gartner is forecasting that, by 2017, 94.5 per cent of downloads will be for free apps,” said Dulaney. Thus the very availability of free apps can decrease people’s usage of paid downloads which can become a major threat in the competitive market.
