9 Most Dangerous Botnets of 2012

#6 SpyEye

Fact: 278 SpyEye C&C Servers are still stealing bank data

Similar to Zeus, the SpyEye is a botnet that is designed to steal sensitive bank data and other consumer credited information. Even though both Zeus and SpyEye work in the same platform, the latter has a bit more sneaky method in grabbing the sensitive data. The botnet first hacks into the victim’s accounts and then slowly gets hold of the password and other secret details of the account holder. This is followed by mysterious transactions from the account to a unknown destination.

#7 Citadel:

Fact: This year, the internet world has seen a 20 percent increase in Citadel attacks

Citadel is another botnet that works on Zeus’ original code. Citadel is also one of the fastest growing botnets across the globe. Even though Citadel embraces Zeus, the pattern of this botnet is altogether different. What makes this botnet highly unusual is how it’s been sold and marketed to criminals. Earlier this year, its developers created a social network to serve as technical support for Citadel, helping cybercriminals report any bugs, suggest new features and connect with other customers.
