Tripura-Bangladesh Trade Soars Over 94% in 5 Years
In his budget presentation for 2024-25, Tripura Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy revealed a remarkable 94.04% surge in trade between Tripura and Bangladesh over the last five years. The trade volume skyrocketed from Rs 390.68 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 758.09 crore in 2022-23, with exports from Tripura to Bangladesh reaching Rs 121.37 crore in 2023-24.
Singha Roy highlighted major power projects under Asian Development Bank (ADB) and World Bank funding by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation. External projects in forest and livelihood sectors, including Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Indo-German Development Cooperation (IGDC), are underway. The Finance Minister also announced the upcoming launch of the World Bank-funded Enhancing Landscape and Ecosystem Management Project (ELEMENT) with a cost of Rs 1764.94 crore.
Emphasizing agricultural initiatives, Singha Roy noted the substantial benefits under the 'Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana' for 2,46,339 farmers and extensive coverage under the 'Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana'. Additionally, progress was reported in rubber plantation, tribal family support, and successful international trade events for Agar tree products.
The Finance Minister highlighted the formation of 47,600 women Self Help Groups (SHGs) under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission, with a focus on empowering rural women. The state government aims to elevate more women in SHGs to 'Lakhpati Didis', targeting 1.14 lakh women by 2025-26. During 2024-25, a total of Rs 698.68 crore is allocated to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
These comprehensive initiatives underscore Tripura's commitment to economic growth, agriculture, and women's empowerment, as outlined in the state's budgetary plans for the upcoming fiscal year.
